Anything-but-Ordinary Chocolate Chip Cookies
Since their debut in the 1930s at Toll House Restaurant in Massachusetts, chocolate cookies have maintained their iconic position as America's favorite cookie flavor. During her extensive global travels, Ericka Frank found herself drawn to the quaint corner bakeries in different places. This inspiration, combined with Ericka's own love of baking, resulted in The Cakery Bakery. Ericka's signature buttercream frosting is so popular that it's now sold at retail. The bakery's made-from-scratch chocolate chip cookies, along with dough to bake your own, can be purchased in both their brick-and-mortar and virtual shops. Classic chocolate chip cookies are an appropriate offering at Winslow's Table, with its neighborhood gathering place vibe. Cookies, pastries, and breads are made fresh daily in the onsite bakery. Be sure to head downstairs and check out the Cellar Shop, filled with curated gifts, artisanal food products, and wine. Old-world baking techniques are new again at Union Loafers, located in the Botanical Heights neighborhood. Their naturally-leavened bread comes in delicious varieties such as seeded, marble rye, and French country sourdough, and the chocolate chip cookies are so good that it's the only dessert on the menu. In the evening, the bakery transforms into a pizzeria serving gourmet pies. Mark Attwood, owner of Comet Coffee, describes himself and his staff as coffee "nerds" who want to share their excitement about their favorite beverage. Thanks to partner and pastry chef Stephanie Fischer, the microbakery turns out quality baked goods to pair with coffee. Chocolate chip cookies are available in regular and vegan varieties, along with chocolate chip muffins. A visit to SweetArt is a treat for the eyes as well as for the taste buds. Chef Reine Bayoc prepares cauliflower bites, "chikn" sandwiches, and other plant-based dishes with a heaping dose of "love and magic." Meanwhile, her former husband, artist Cbabi Bayoc, uses the restaurant as a gallery to display beautiful paintings, drawings, and prints. In fact, much of the funding to open SweetArt was raised through sales of Cbabi's art. Chocolate chip cookies and other baked goods are made from scratch, "like Grandma used to make." Hours are 10:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 10:30 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
